Historic Success: 2,000 Jewish Students Unite in Brooklyn for Pegisha 2024
From November 15-17, Crown Heights was filled with unparalleled energy and inspiration as 2,000 Jewish college students from 176 universities across eight countries gathered for Pegisha 2024, the largest Jewish student Shabbat celebration in the world. Organized by Chabad on Campus International, this year’s Pegisha shattered expectations and became a beacon of Jewish pride and unity amid challenging times.
Despite the growing shadow of antisemitism on campuses, this year’s record attendance underscored an undeniable truth: Jewish students are embracing their heritage and community with unprecedented passion. Originally capped at 1,200 participants, overwhelming demand led organizers to expand the event, enlisting additional resources and venues to ensure every interested student could attend.
“In this critical moment, we could not turn away a single student,” said Rabbi Avi Weinstein, COO of Chabad on Campus International. “The resilience and enthusiasm these young adults bring to their Jewish identity is nothing short of inspiring. Pegisha is a powerful statement that Jewish pride is stronger than ever.”
During the weekend, attendees immersed themselves in a deeply meaningful Shabbat experience hosted by the vibrant and welcoming Chabad community of Crown Heights. Highlights included traditional Shabbat meals in local homes, dynamic workshops, and empowering speakers. Beyond spiritual connection, Pegisha offered a reprieve for students and their leaders, many of whom have faced heightened tensions and adversity since October 7.
The pinnacle of the event was Saturday night’s Havdalah ceremony, where all 2,000 students joined in a breathtaking display of Jewish unity and joy. The spirited prayers, songs, and dances radiated hope and resilience, leaving an indelible mark on everyone present.
The Numbers Speak Volumes:
• 2,000 students — Almost doubling last year’s attendance of 1,300.
• 176 universities — Representing North America and beyond.
• 8 countries — Demonstrating the global reach of Chabad on Campus.
This year’s Pegisha wasn’t just an event—it was a movement. It sent a resounding message: Jewish students are proud, united, and ready to face the future with strength and optimism.
