Gaining Skills and Confidence: WJCS’ Volunteer Internship Program (VIP)

By Ava Propper Rubin

“Volunteering at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers has been a wonderful experience for me. It has been the perfect stepping stone as I re–enter the world of work. I work as a cashier in the gift shop four days a week. I am slowly overcoming my fears of getting back to work and socializing in professional environments. I have gained confidence that I am capable of being professional in the workplace.” ~Susannah, 43, Participant in the WJCS Volunteer Internship Program

Susannah, 43, is one of the many individuals who has found purpose, developed skills, and increased confidence as a result of being involved in the Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) Volunteer Internship Program (VIP). “VIP was established for adults 18 and older recovering from mental illness and wish to partake in and benefit from a volunteer or internship work experience,” said VIP Coordinator Jodi Maxner.

After an intake process, participants are placed in volunteer positions at non-profit organizations throughout Westchester that match their interests, skills, and prior job history. “The volunteer experiences help participants gain valuable tools to help them achieve their future vocational goals,” explained Maxner, who hosts monthly meetings in which members have the opportunity to share their volunteer experiences and engage in group activities.

Like her dedicated volunteering peers, Susannah has committed to devoting at least 10 hours a week to her position. “Susannah is a great addition to our volunteer family. We are blessed to have her join us. Her great customer service and smile makes a difference to all that walk in to the gift shop,” said Maria F. Callarame, External Affairs Manager at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center.

For more information about the WJCS Volunteer Internship Program, contact Jodi Maxner at 914-761-0600 x2223 or email jmaxner@wjcs.com. VIP applicants must be referred by a mental health professional and reside in Westchester County.
